In the heart of industrial Lancashire in the early 1900s Victorian values are crumbling. More men have a vote but women’s choices are still limited.
The Truesdale and Woodward families of Atherley in Lancashire continue to flourish in the early years of the twentieth century. Contracts are still sealed by a handshake and a man’s word is his bond. Edward’s marriage is a very profitable business deal. Divorce is rare and, like shooting pheasants, is confined mainly to the upper class. Although the law favours the husband, Edward has to play a long game.
